App Store: Analysis of TOP 100 Free Games

The situation in Top 100 Paid Games has been cleared up in our previous post. It's becoming a magnet for big game developers and publishers who port their popular games for iPhone platform.  In Top 100 Free Games situation is a little bit different:  ported games take a smaller part of a pie (36%) and original iPhone games predominate (64%).  It is very logic because the majority of famous publishers do not want to give away their games for free and have enough fans and enough marketing forces to push their games in TOP 100 Paid and usually for relatively high prices.

In TOP 100 Free Games we observe the situation that is still favorable for small developers with new bright ideas.

As for TOP 100 Free Games company structure the situation is similar to paid games. The market is very fragmented: 65 companies are presented here. The difference is that there are more games of small iphone-focused companies like Optime Software, Storm8, Ngmoco, LabPixies and less games by the sharks of this business like Gameloft, Electronic Arts, Glu. For example, the part of the companies that came from other platforms is 46% (compare to TOP 100 Paid Games - 71%).

Conclusion: getting in TOP 100 Paid Games is becoming more difficult for newcomers to iPhone market but still not impossible. The market is still relatively young and it still gives chances not only for leaders but for a huge number of different developers that is proved by its high fragmentation. However the competition is rising and now we can see not only "young, innovative and creative" teams but also big serious companies that are ready to invest in order to get its piece of the pie. As for us we are looking forward to TOP 100 Free Games. We still need to choose among business strategies (free+paid, lite+paid, only free+ads) but it's for sure that for a small company it will be much easier to take its position in TOP 100 Free Games.
